Security Features

ThrowAwayMsg is built around one principle: your messages should be private, temporary, and unreadable to anyone but your intended recipient — including us.

Client-Side Encryption

Every message is encrypted on your device — in your browser — before it ever reaches our servers. We use industry-standard encryption to scramble your text into unreadable ciphertext. The encryption key is derived from the unique share link ID, which means only someone with the full link can decrypt and read the message. Even we can't read your content, because we never have the key.

Screenshot & Copy Prevention

While a recipient is viewing your message, screen capture, text selection, right-click context menus, and copy-paste are all disabled in the viewing window. While no solution is 100% foolproof on every device, these protections add a strong layer of defense against casual saving or forwarding of your content.

Self-Destructing Messages

Once a message is opened, a countdown timer begins. When the timer expires, the message is permanently and irrevocably deleted from our servers — no archives, no backups, no recovery. You can also set messages to auto-expire after a fixed time, even if they're never opened. What's read (or expired) is gone for good.

Optional Password Protection

Add a second layer of security by requiring a password to open your message. Even if someone intercepts the share link, they can't access the content without the password. We recommend sharing the password through a completely different channel — a phone call, a text — never in the same message as the link.

Security Levels

When you create a message, we automatically calculate a security level based on your settings. Here's what each level means:

Basic

Encrypted, self-destructing message with standard viewing time.

Medium

Adds password protection or shorter viewing windows for extra safety.

Maximum

Password-protected, dual destruction mode (read + timer), and minimal viewing time.

Important: No security system is perfect. A determined recipient can always photograph their screen with another device. ThrowAwayMsg is designed to protect against digital copying, server-side access, and lingering data — not against someone physically pointing a camera at their screen. Share sensitive information only with people you trust.
